Central heating power flushing for homes in Telford and Shropshire

Over the years, most central heating systems build up sludge. It’s a dark mix of rust and debris from inside your radiators and pipes. It settles where water moves slowly, blocks narrow pipework and stops heat getting round the house. I’m Lee from LMS Heating Solutions, a Gas Safe registered engineer (no. 974132), and power flushing is one of the services I offer across Telford and Shropshire, where your system needs it.
What is power flushing?
Power flushing cleans the inside of your central heating system. I carry out full power flushes of old and dirty systems, using a combination of a power flushing machine and chemicals to clean the system thoroughly. The machine pushes water through the system at a high flow, and the chemicals help loosen the sludge so it can be carried out of the radiators and pipes.
Signs your heating system may need a power flush
- Radiators cold at the bottom but warm at the top (cold at the top usually means air, which needs bleeding instead)
- Some radiators slow to heat up, or never getting properly hot
- Dark or black water when you bleed a radiator
- A noisy boiler: banging, gurgling or a kettle-like rumbling
- Radiators that need bleeding again and again
- The heating takes longer to warm the house than it used to
These signs don’t always mean you need a power flush. A cold radiator can also come down to a stuck valve, air in the system or a system that needs balancing. I’ll look at your system first and tell you honestly whether a power flush is the right fix, or whether something simpler will sort it.
Power flushing before a new boiler
A new boiler works best on a clean heating system. Sludge and debris in older radiators and pipes can stop heat getting round the house and put extra strain on the new boiler. Where your system needs it, I offer power flushing and system preparation before the new boiler goes in, and I’ll tell you what your system needs first.
If you’re planning a replacement, see my new boiler installation in Telford page.
What happens when I power flush your system
- I check the system first. I look at the boiler, radiators, valves and pipework, and explain what I’ve found.
- I agree the work with you. It’s always a fixed price. If there are ever any changes due to unforeseen circumstances, I’ll discuss them with you before any work takes place.
- I flush the system. I use a combination of machine and chemicals to clear the sludge out of the radiators and pipework.
- I explain what I found. I’ll tell you how the system looks afterwards and whether anything else needs attention.
How long it takes depends on the size and condition of your system. I’ll give you an idea once I’ve had a look.
Is power flushing right for every system?
Not always. On some older systems, the pipework or radiators may already be weak, and cleaning out the sludge can reveal existing leaks that the sludge was hiding. That’s one reason I check the system before recommending a flush. If I find leaks, I can track them down with a thermal imaging camera and pressure testing: see my leak detection page.
If your boiler itself is faulty, a power flush won’t fix that. See my boiler repair page.

Power flushing FAQs
Do I need a power flush with a new boiler?
Not always. It depends on the condition of your existing system. Where your system needs it, I offer power flushing and system preparation before the new boiler goes in, and I’ll tell you what your system needs before any work is agreed.
How much does a power flush cost?
It depends on the size of your system and how many radiators you have, so I don’t list prices on the website. Once I’ve looked at your system, I’ll give you a price. It’s always a fixed price. If there are ever any changes due to unforeseen circumstances, I’ll discuss them with you before any work takes place.
How do I know if my radiators have sludge in them?
The usual signs are radiators that are cold at the bottom but warm at the top, and dark or black water when you bleed them. Send me a photo or video on WhatsApp and I can tell you what I think.
Will a power flush fix a cold radiator?
If sludge is causing it, a power flush will often help. If the cause is air, a sticking valve or a system that needs balancing, there’s usually a simpler fix. I’ll check before recommending anything.
Can a power flush cause leaks?
A power flush shouldn’t damage pipework that’s in good condition. On older systems, though, it can reveal weak spots or leaks that sludge had been plugging. I check the system first and will explain any risk before we go ahead.
